A New Project for a New Year Mulberry Hill

A Happy Safe and Prosperous New Year to all my bloggy friends, and thank you to all who are following my blog. Enjoy all your lovely projects and have fun with them.
I spent the last couple of weeks catching up with old friends and family, it was so nice to relax and enjoy the company of good friends and great memories.
But it was also great to have the house back to myself and pick up my project box and sort out fabrics for a new project to begin the new year with. In my last post I mentioned going to Craftpaks Patchwork Shop in Heathmont and buying  some lovely gifts for myself well I also bought Lisa's Mulberry Hill pattern. I just love it and couldn't resist.

                  Happy sewing.........

Scandinavian Rose Quilt

Scandinavian Rose Quilt
I have managed to complete one block of my Scandinavian Rose Quilt and sew a few rows for the borders. I am very pleased with the colours I decided to use and look forward to completing more blocks.

Block 3

I started on block 1, and think it is starting to take shape nicely.  I am very eager to keep going but will have to put it down to go and do my Christmas shopping. I swapped with my daughter in law so I am having Christmas lunch at our house this year. There will only be nine of us as two of my granddaughters can't be with us this year. It's an exciting time of the year and I am looking forward to having the family around the table.

Poached Pears in Red Wine.

My version of Poached Pears in Red Wine. This makes a lovely desert or when the pears are cold you could slice them and add to a salad.

3 cups red wine
2 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1 drop peppermint
1 slice orange rind
1 Cinnamon stick
1/2 cup Asst berries from freezer (3 berry mix)
Put all ingredients in pot stir over low heat till sugar is dissolved then
Peel pears and place in pot
Simmer for about 35 mins.
Place pears and liquid in a large bowl and in refrigerator to cool. Then,
Remove pears from liquid and enjoy.
I store the liquid in refrigerator and use it to pour over custard, fruit, pancakes etc.

Happy Stitching..........

Almond Bread
I also made some almond bread, it makes a great gift at Christmas, served with coffee for those unexpected visitors or just a treat for yourself.

More Christmas Buttons and Ornaments

It's been a very busy week and I managed to achieve a few more of my goals. I made these lovely white felt ornaments, I found the patterns at
http://www.domestifluff.com/2010/12/felt-holiday-ornaments-free-ornament-templates/
Felt Holiday Ornaments + Free Ornament Templates

Also I made a few more birds for my tree but this time I made them using white felt and added wings.

Two more heart shapes with Theodora Cleave buttons.

Another ribbon Xmas tree this time I cut ribbon pieces about 3 to 4 inches in length folded in half and pinned on a Styrofoam cone.

Also I thought you might like to see my Bon Bons that I made previously, I usually fill them with individual trinkets, joke and hats that I make but this year I bought a  packet and used them in my fabric Bon Bons. They look great on the table or as you see them in a bowl as an added decoration.

Last but not least a beautiful bird which was given to me as a little gift from a very clever friend.

Cherry Chocolate Quilt.

We had our Christmas Meeting Saturday with lots of food and yummy deserts. Everyone brought a plate along and I am always amazed at how we seem to always have the right amount of dishes for lunch as well as sweets, not once has there been a shortage of one or the other. We all had so much fun sharing jokes, ideas for new projects and recipes. Unfortunately I forgot my camera so no photos.
Karin from Mrs Martin and Lisa from fig 'n' berry creations set up a stall with lovely products to tempt us. Lisa had all her quilts and patterns on display and Karen had lots of fabrics etc. to inspire us. I bought one of Lisa's patterns that I fell in love with; I will take a photo of it when I am ready to start on it.
Lisa had also finished quilting my Night Before Christmas quilt which she brought along to give me, as usual she had done a magnificent job of quilting it, but that story will have to wait till I put the binding on and take some photos of it.

The other big surprise for me was Gayle had also finished my Cherry Chocolate quilt and had it with her to give to me. It looked gorgeous I couldn't wait to put the binding on. It was what she called her practise quilt as she had only just started on her machine. The long arm machine quilting was spectacular. I put the binding on this morning but still need to hand stitch it in the back, but I was so excited I have taken photos of it and lots photos of the quilting.

Happy quilting..........

I am so pleased this morning to be able to show you my Cottage Garden Quilt top Pieced. I decided that I will quilt it myself as it is only small and I would like to have it finished before Christmas.
I thoroughly enjoyed stitching all the little blocks and watching them grow into this lovely quilt. Now all I have to do is put myself into quilting mode...............and add all the lovely buttons.

Back to Mrs Billings Quilt

Mrs Billings Coverlet

I finally had a chance to do a little on Mrs Billings. I really have been neglecting her while I worked on my other projects. I still would like to do a few more Christmas items and finish my Garden Quilt but thought I should at least make a few more hexies for my next border. I would also like to welcome Usha to our little group.
Happy stitching.

Birds of a Feather

Something a bit different ,I made these birds for Christmas decorations using the Spool Bird Pattern. Follow the link below for the pattern.

Birds on a Branch

Birds of a Feather
Spool Birds

This is my scented bird pattern, I stuff the birds with wadding and lavender. It is a very easy project to make and as I don't add eyes or wings fast results in a short amount of time. I hang the birds on dead tree branches and place them in a vase for an eye-catching effect.
Leave opening at tail

Christmas Ribbon Tree

Yesterday I met with my monthly group of ladies . We decided to meet earlier as we were going to start working on out Ribbon Tree by Sunburnt Quilts. We all began enthusiastically and with lots of oohs and aahs and laughter we worked steadily through the day.We stopped for lunch which was very short as we were all eager to keep going. By 3.30 we all decided to stop and finish the last bit at home. I worked on mine when I got home then stopped to cook dinner and continued for another hour and there it is. Tah dah !!!!!!!!!!

Garden Quilt progress

It's a beautiful morning the sun is shining and the birds singing. Looking out over the bay there is a lone sailing boat heading out to bass strait. Soon I will go out into my vegi garden to check its progress, then this afternoon I hope to sit down and do a little more stitching. Yesterday I finished my two blocks for the Sandy Quilt Drive to be made into quilts for the people affected by Sandy.
Also I managed to finish another two blocks for My Garden Quilt.

Learning to Crochet

I crochet this little hat yesterday, it was my first attempt at reading a crotchet pattern. I have only crocheted plain squares in the past. Unfortunately I must have missed something on the way it is to small for a baby. But I did learn that I was making my DC's incorrectly. Oh well back to the drawing board. I did learn how to make a magic adjustable ring to begin my crotchet. Excellent instructions and photos .Web address below.
